The Smartcool technology was originally designed in Australia in the 1980’s, and subsequently purchased by a Canadian company in 2006, which is now on the Canadian stock exchange. Chris Rogerson heads up Smartcool Systems Australia, he has been intimately involved with this optimisation technology since 2000 and has lead most of the technology advances with the product developments.

Chris has optimised many hundreds of chilled water air conditioning systems in the Asia region, more than any other Smartcool distributor globally. Smartcool Australia have over 5,000 systems in Australia

Cooling can account for up to 70% of a power bill, the compressor will account for up to 70% of that energy cost.

How does it work?

Smartcool’s copyrighted technology is retrofitted onto any sized system, it monitors the systems normal cycling behaviour then understands and implements where savings can be achieved.

Typically, compressors simply cycle ON/OFF as it reaches a pre-set temperature settings, as indicated below.The Conventional cooling system compressor will remain on until the thermostat reaches the minimum temperature setting, at which point it will switch off until the maximum temperature setting is reached.

In the above diagram, the cycle between the low (5C) and high (10C) temperature settings is known as the ‘control band’. in the upper band (10C down to 7.5C mark) when the compressor is on and cooling the system is at its most efficient.

The lower band of the control band (7.5C down to 5C) is when the system is least efficient and the compressors can be using twice as much energy that was just being used in the upper band. This is the area where the compressor optimisation operates and illustrated below.

The Smartcool technology is installed between the thermostat (controller) and the compressor. Once commissioned the Smartcool system monitors the control band and then dynamically adjusts the length of the cooling cycle in the lower band.

The Smartcool unit will intercept the signal from the controller and calculate when the compressor should be engaged and for how long to maximise the energy whilst not compromising on the required temperature settings.

Smartcool’s technology will not allow the compressor to short cycle and keeps it operating within manufacturer recommended conditions.

SmartCool provides a new level of intelligent predictive and learning control, rather than a pre-set reactive control.

The Smartcool ECO3

The ECO3 is suitable for the following with single or dual compressors:

  • Packaged air conditioning systems – both residential and commercial up to approximately 80kWr.
  • Small commercial refrigeration systems (chiller & freezer) up to approximately 30kWr.
  • Combined heat pump systems – both residential and commercial

Smartcool’s ECO3 is proven to save up to 17% kWh energy used by the compressor in air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pump systems (HVAC-R).

The ECO3 achieves savings using intelligent cycle optimization technology.

Even on the most modern equipment with intelligent controls, or where other energy saving processes are already installed, Smartcool’s ECO3 provides energy efficiency gains.

The ECO3 works with any control system on these types of cooling units, including systems with any load profile, night set-back routine, non-demand related interruptions, demand limiting and demand response functionality.

The ECO3 interfaces with existing controls and equipment, and installation can be completed in an hour without any system interruption or impact on controlled space conditions.

  • 14.1% Energy savings

    One (1) ECO³™ was installed onto a 44kW ActronAir packaged unit in the Bishop St depot. The aircon operated on a timer, 5 days per week, 10 hours per day.

    ACR data loggers were installed to measure the energy consumption and room temperature. The data loggers were installed a week before commissioning of the ECO³™ and then measured the week following of the installation.

    Validated savings of 14.1%, which is 30kWh per day, with no effect on the internal temperatures.

  • 22% Energy savings

    One (1) ECO³™ was installed onto a Temperzone single compressor unit servicing the ground floor foyer.

    ACR data loggers were installed to measure the energy consumption and room temperature. The data loggers were installed a week before commissioning of the ECO³™ and then measured the week following of the installation.

    Validated savings of 14.1%, which is 20kWh per day, with no effect on the internal temperatures.

  • 23% Energy savings

    One (1) ECO³™ was installed onto a 12kWr ActronAir dual compressor air conditioning system, operating 7 days per week & 11 hours per day..

    ACR data loggers were installed to measure the energy consumption and room temperature. The data loggers were installed a week before commissioning of the ECO³™ and then measured the week following of the installation.

    Validated savings of 23%, which is 44.4kWh per day, with no effect on the internal temperatures.

  • 18.4% Energy savings

    One (1) ECO³™ was installed onto a 12kWr APAC air conditioning system, operating 5 days per week & 12 hours per day..

    ACR data loggers were installed to measure the energy consumption and room temperature. The data loggers were installed a week before commissioning of the ECO³™ and then measured the week following of the installation.

    Validated savings of 18.4%, which is 11.5kWh per day, with no effect on the internal temperatures.

The ESM range

Smartcool’s ESM is an advanced energy efficiency retrofit product that can save up to 40% kWh energy on compressor operation in even the most complex air conditioning and refrigeration systems (HVAC-R).

Energy savings by the ESM are achieved using the compressor optimization strategy most appropriate for the existing equipment. As a modular product, the ESM is customized for each installation, giving it complete compatibility with a wide range of equipment and controls.

The ESM improves the energy efficiency of commercial and industrial cooling systems like:

  • Refrigeration racks or packs
  • Single and multi-compressor air conditioning systems
  • Chillers or chilled line systems
  • Process cooling system

A few success stories…

  • 18.05% Energy savings

    ESM modules were installed onto two (2) Carrier chillers.

    ACR data loggers were installed to measure the energy consumption and room temperature. The data loggers were installed 6 days prior to commissioning of the ESM and then measured the following 6 days after the installation.

    Validated savings of 18.05%, which is 398kWh per day.

    Note: These savings are higher than Expected and cannot be expected for every chiller project.

  • 22% Energy savings

    ESM was installed onto a Carrier chiller set (#1) with an approximate refrigeration capacity of 800kWr.

    ACR data loggers were installed to measure the energy consumption and room temperature. The data loggers were installed during a 4  week period and the system was bypassed on alternating weeks to accurately measure the consumption impact.

    Validated savings of 22%, which is 508kWh per day, with no effect on the internal temperatures.

  • 12.8% Energy savings

    ESM was installed onto a 180kWr Temperzone air conditioner in Townsville.

    ACR data loggers were installed to measure the energy consumption and room temperature. The data loggers were installed during a 4 week period.

    Validated savings of 12.8%, plus a coil clean resulted in 22.6% savings, 96.8kWh per day, with no effect on the internal temperatures.

  • 7.4% Energy savings

    ESM was installed onto a Carrier Centrifugal chiller, Manila Phillipines.

    ACR data loggers were installed to measure the energy consumption and room temperature. The data loggers were installed during a 4 week period.

    Validated savings of 7.4%, which is 159kWh per day, with no effect on the internal temperatures.
